So we learned on Monday that when cortisol is constantly elevated it causes hormonal reactions that lead to weight gain, especially on the abdomen.
The abdomen is a dangerous area to be carrying fat and an indication of viscal fat (internal fat that wraps around the vital organs like the pancreas & liver and can lead to long term disease and complications such as heart disease & type 2 diabetes).
My clients lose inches from their tummy through lowering their cortisol levels. Two ways of lowering this hormone are getting enough sleep and managing our stress levels.
Getting enough sleep is vital for fat loss.
Aim to be asleep in a dark, peaceful room free of electrical equipment between 10.30 and 6.00.
Spend at least an hour or so winding down before bed to ensure your brain has a chance to switch to go slow, as well as your body.
The BABEs are off gadgets at 9, up to bed at 10 and asleep by 10.30.
Getting off electronics an hour before bed will really improve the quality of your sleep and help you fall asleep quicker.
A good nights sleep will help reduce cortisol levels as well as several other hormones involved in weight gain.
High stress levels will also cause the body to retain fat in the abdomen, as it elevates cortisol.
Meditation, yoga and just staying calm in everyday situations will help keep stress and anxiety under control, as will talking to someone, maybe a friend or professional, about what’s on your mind.
Also, getting enough omega 3 fatty acids will lower cortisol levels, aim to eat oily fish, avocados and olive oils as part of your diet.
If you know you don’t get enough in your diet buy a good quality fish oil. (You get what you pay for, capsules are often rancid, so aim for good quality. The extra expense will be worth it as it will assist in fat burning)
Ashwaghanda is a herb native to India that has been around for thousands of years and has been proven to lower cortisol levels and help reduce anxiety and stress levels. Available in a tincture aim for ½ – 1 teaspoon daily.
I have had clients lose inches around their middles from just these adjustments, managing their stress, decreasing their long bouts of cardio exercise and getting decent nights sleep!
